This morning, construction workers have blocked the renovation of the sun terraces in Valby.
On the site there are companies carrying out demolition work without collective agreements and underpayment. The City of Copenhagen is the client and Jakon is the main contractor. The demolition company is HTO, which in turn has hired subcontractors.
Another classic example of the need for a chain of responsibility so that large contractors cannot cheat their way around the collective agreement by hiring subcontractors.
When the construction workers arrived at the site, they also found large amounts of asbestos waste in unlocked containers outside the site, labelled ‘large combustible’.
After a three-hour blockade, Jakon was pressurised into signing an agreement with the construction workers’ union, in which Jakon takes financial responsibility for the demolition workers and guarantees that the work will be carried out in accordance with the collective agreement.
This gives us partial chain responsibility and we will keep a close eye on the site to make sure that social dumping and an unsafe working environment at Johan Krohns Vej are a thing of the past.
This is another victory for our community and proof that when we stand together and act, we can create change! ✊🚩
