Portugal: 1º de Maio

Dear comrades

On behalf of the CGTP-IN and the Portuguese workers we want to greet the workers of your countries and your organization in particular, on this May 1^st when we celebrate the International Workers’ Day.

In Portugal the May Day was preceded by the popular commemorations of the 49th anniversary of the April 25th revolution, where the workers and their class unions assumed a decisive role in affirming their values – freedom, democracy and peace, defending the rights of the workers, affirming this path as the only alternative against the threat of fascism.

Values that we take to the May 1^st, where the workers’ demands gained expression, their demand for a better life, in defence of the increase in salaries, in the reduction of working hours, for peace and for internationalist solidarity.

To the lack of response from the Socialist Party government, that maintains its submission to the dictates of the EU and the Euro, the workers raised their voices and built a great May 1^st in 32 cities across the country.

In the speech of the General Secretary of CGTP-IN, in Lisbon, solidarity was expressed with the workers in struggle all over the world, greeting all those who, 137 years after the Chicago massacres, origin of the May 1^st celebrations, are taking to the streets. Greeting all those who resist and demand more rights and fight for better living and working conditions, all those who achieve conquests, those who fight for peace, friendship and cooperation among peoples, all those who affirm solidarity and reject war, interference and aggression that feed business and only serve capital.

In Portugal the struggle will continue in the companies and in the workplaces – the most valuable contribution of the Portuguese workers to the common struggle of the workers around the world against exploitation and in defense of their rights and interests.

In a moment of great importance for workers all over the world, please accept the most fraternal greetings and solidarity of Portuguese workers to your struggle and action in defense of workers’ interests.

1º de Maio

Caros camaradas,

Em nome da CGTP-IN e dos trabalhadores Portugueses queremos saudar os trabalhadores dos vossos países e a vossa organização em particular, neste dia 1º de Maio em que se comemora o Dia Internacional do trabalhador.

Em Portugal a jornada do 1º de Maio foi antecedida das comemorações populares dos 49 anos da revolução de 25 de Abril, onde os trabalhadores e os seus sindicatos de classe assumiram um papel determinante na afirmação dos seus valores – a liberdade, a democracia e a paz, defendendo os direitos dos trabalhadores, afirmando este caminho como a única alternativa contra a ameaça do fascismo.

Valores que levamos para o 1º de Maio, onde ganharam expressão as reivindicações dos trabalhadores, a sua exigência por uma vida melhor, em defesa do aumento dos salários, na redução dos horários de trabalho, pela paz e pela solidariedade internacionalista.

À falta de resposta do governo do Partido Socialista, que mantem a sua submissão aos ditames da UE e do Euro, os trabalhadores engrossaram a voz e construíram um grande 1º de Maio em 32 cidades do país.

Na intervenção da Secretária-Geral da CGTP-IN, em Lisboa, foi expressa a solidariedade para com os trabalhadores em luta em todo o mundo, saudando todos os que por todo o mundo saem à rua 137 anos depois dos massacres de Chicago, origem das comemorações do 1º de Maio, todos os resistem e exigem mais direitos e lutam por melhores condições de vida e de trabalho; todos os que alcançam conquistas, os que lutam pela paz, a amizade e a cooperação entre os povos; todos os que afirmam a solidariedade e rejeitam a guerra, a ingerência e a agressão que alimentam o negócio e só servem o capital.

Em Portugal a luta irá continuar nas empresas e nos locais de trabalho – o contributo mais valioso dos trabalhadores portugueses para a luta comum dos trabalhadores de todo o mundo conta a exploração e em defesa dos seus direitos e interesses.

Num momento de grande importância para os trabalhadores de todo o mundo, queiram receber as mais fraternas saudações e solidariedade dos trabalhadores Portugueses à vossa luta e acção em defesa dos interesses dos trabalhadores.
