Solidarity message of the European Regional Office of WFTU on the decision of the Prague authorities to remove the sculpture of Marshal Konev

Dear Comrades.

The European Regional Office of WFTU expresses its protest against the unacceptable decision by the Prague authorities to remove the sculpture of Marshal Konev, at a moment while all over the world fights against the Corona pandemic and health related restrictions are taken.

It is even worse to mention, that the decision was taken at the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Europe from Nazism- fascism.

Despite international protests and interventions, on Friday 3 April the monument of Marshal Konev, who was commander in chief of the Red Army’s troops and liberator of Prague was dismantled and transported away.

Following the scandalous declaration of the European Parliament on 19 September 2019  we are now witnessing another appalling example in Prague of the consequences of the historical revisionism. The decision of the Prague authorities to remove a sculpture commemorating the victims and honoring the liberators of the anti-Hitler coalition is a political scandal against those people who dedicated their lives for the liberty of today and cannot be surpassed.

The European Regional Office of WFTU  and its members,  we convey our solidarity with the Trade Union Association of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia  federations and we are confident   that the Czech working class and the anti-fascists  forces will retain alive  the memory of the liberators despite this outrage and will remember in worthy public forms Marshal Konev and the thousands of fighters in the ranks of the Red Army, who accomplished the liberation achievement.
