ILO: Domestic Workers sustain our economy. It is time to protect them!

Domestic workers are central to the global care economy.

They make it possible for millions of women and men to participate in the labour market while caring for their families.

As populations age and care needs grow, domestic workers – especially migrant domestic workers – are becoming even more essential to societies and labour markets.

A sustainable future of care starts with rights and protection for domestic workers.

Domestic workers provide essential care and support, yet they are among the workers most exposed to informality, forced labour, child labour, discrimination, and violence and harassment.

Climate shocks, conflict, migration, demographic change and digital transformation are reshaping domestic work and increasing vulnerabilities for millions of workers.

Convention No. 189 offers a framework to ensure change leads to decent jobs instead of deeper inequality.
