The European Regional Office of the WFTU sends its best wishes for the success of the general strike of Portuguese workers called by the CGTP-IN on 3 June 2026 against the ‘Labour Package’, through which the Portuguese government intends to worsen the already harsh living, working and income conditions of millions of Portuguese people.
The very same measures Portugal intends to adopt have been implemented in many other European countries, following the diktats of the European Union, which must divert enormous resources from welfare, income and employment support towards military spending to satisfy the ‘Rearm Europe’ programme and the European defence project.
In every European country, general strikes have been called by workers’ organisations to reject these plans.
We therefore welcome with satisfaction the new general strike by Portuguese workers.
The unity of the struggles and trade union solidarity are important weapons in the hands of the workers, as demonstrated by the massive mobilisations across all European countries that have filled the streets in protest against war and rearmament.
In solidarity with the Portuguese workers
No to the Pacote Laboral
Long live internationalist solidarity
