The Trade Union Association of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia calls upon the Government of the Czech Republic, ahead of the upcoming vote at the United Nations General Assembly, to cast its vote in unequivocal support of the resolution demanding an end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on the Republic of Cuba by the United States of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The peoples of Cuba and the Czech Republic are bound by a long-standing, fraternal friendship. Currently, the Republic of Cuba and its people are facing ever-intensifying and unprecedented pressure from the United States of America and its administration. The economic blockade has been compounded by an energy blockade, the threat of direct coercive measures\u2014including military intervention\u2014and an attempt to impose a political blockade aimed at influencing the positions of individual UN member states, including those that hold significant sway within international organizations and the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The scale of the pressure exerted by the U.S. administration now amounts to a deliberate genocide of the Cuban people. The objective is to drive them\u2014through starvation, the denial of access to basic healthcare for economic reasons, and the creation of a desperate economic and social situation\u2014to rise up against their own government. This constitutes a brutal interference in the internal affairs of another sovereign state and a violation of the norms of international law, the UN Charter, and other international conventions. It is unacceptable for a single state\u2014in this case, the United States of America\u2014to assert that its own interests take precedence over international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vote on the resolution calling for an end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on the Republic of Cuba by the United States is more than just a diplomatic act. It concerns the right of the Cuban people to live with dignity and to have access to electricity, water, medicine, and basic necessities and services\u2014free from the restrictions caused by an unjustified and aggressive blockade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Republic of Cuba and the Cuban people have never posed a threat to anyone. Cuba has consistently and selflessly provided extensive humanitarian aid\u2014in the form of teachers, doctors, and aid workers\u2014to countries and peoples in urgent need. In contrast, the United States has aggressively pursued wars and interventions, and has exerted crude diplomatic and economic pressure, all to secure its own imperial and hegemonic interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Trade Union Association of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia therefore calls upon the Government of the Czech Republic to condemn the blockade of Cuba and to vote for its termination during the upcoming UN General Assembly vote on this resolution. By doing so, the Czech Republic would also honor its own progressive traditions\u2014a fitting gesture as we approach the national holiday of October 28th, which marks the founding of the independent Czechoslovak Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
