USB condemns in the strongest possible terms the renewal until 2031 of the Memorandum of Military Cooperation between Italy and Israel, a grave and unacceptable decision that takes place against a backdrop marked by the genocide of the Palestinian people and Israel\u2019s military escalation in the region, including attacks on Iran and Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Italian government will automatically renew the Memorandum of Understanding on military cooperation with Israel, which expired on 13 April. The memorandum was signed in 2003 (Defence Minister Martino, Berlusconi government) and ratified by Parliament in 2005 without much opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since then, the military cooperation agreement with Israel has been automatically renewed every five years, unless one of the two countries decides to withdraw, and no government (whether right-wing or left-wing) has ever withdrawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today more than ever, the Italian Government\u2019s decision is a deliberate political act that strengthens and consolidates Italy\u2019s complicity with the Israeli government. A complicity that we have long denounced and which is today further reaffirmed by the renewal of a military agreement that binds Italy to a war machine responsible for devastation, occupation, repression and genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A decision that runs counter to the principles of the Italian Constitution, starting with the rejection of war, and to every rule of international law. Those responsible for this umpteenth violation will have to answer on all levels\u2014political, legal and moral\u2014for their complicity with a terrorist, racist and genocidal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The strikes on 22 September, 3 October and 29 November were against genocide, war and rearmament, but also against the Italian government\u2019s complicity with the Israeli government. On those days, we took to the streets and workplaces to highlight that Italy is an active part of a system that supports and fuels the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the renewal of the Memorandum until 2031, this complicity is further strengthened. The government chooses to side with war, occupation and the systematic violation of peoples\u2019 rights, ignoring the will of millions of workers who are calling for peace, justice and an end to war policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
USB reaffirms and reinforces the need for conscientious objection against any form of direct or indirect collaboration with the Israeli government. Those working in ports, logistics, industry and public research must not be turned into cogs in the machinery of war: we call on everyone to refuse involvement in activities linked to war support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We will continue to organise mobilisations and initiatives to stop the war and militarisation and to terminate all institutional, scientific and military agreements with Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We will continue our \u2018I don\u2019t work for war\u2019 campaign in every workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We demand the immediate revocation of the Memorandum because there can be no neutrality in the face of genocide and systematic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ours is a class, internationalist and solidarity struggle: alongside the Palestinian people and all oppressed peoples, against war, colonialism and all forms of exploitation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
